My 10 y.o. son is diabetic, and I need some good, comforting answers to some of his statements. Let me give you an example. Two nights ago, his sugar was 471, then within an hour an a half, he came to me and told me he felt low. So we tested his sugar and it was 19. After giving him some crackers (carbs, to bring it up) and juice, then finally some life savers, it was up to 41. Still real low. He looks at me and says "Mom, I know I'm dying from diabetes." It broke my heart, but all I could say was "No honey, we'll get it fixed." I didn't know what else to say. Anyone with any suggestions? Serious only please as this is a very tough situation for my family. Thank You

I think his comment was because of the way that he was feeling at the time, though he's never said the "i hate being diabetic...." I think it was a reaction to the situation at the time.

Tell him everyone gets sick sometimes, remind him of colds/flus his had and tell him " And you felt better after awhile didn't you?" Diabetes is hard at first especially for children (my eight year old sister has diabetes) 19 is wayyyy to low for his blood sugar. You should put your whole family on a healthy diet and make exercise fun. Diabetes can be life threatning but it isn't the end of the world. After we got my sister exercising more and making it fun( everyone went swimming together, we started having races, and taking our dogs for walks) and having everyone eat healthy with and around her, her blood sugars eventually evened out and everything is fine now. It will be ok=) Don't worry, just stay educated about his condition. Sounds like your a great mom!

He must have extremely severe diabetes to be dying from it... but I'd suggest just say anything you can think of to comfort him. No one here can tell you what is the right thing to say, its something you have to do yourself for your son.

That is really sad and it makes me want to cry. I would really just comfort him and make him feel very loved and if there is a day if you know for sure that he will pass (not to make you sad) just of course remind him of how much he is loved and how much he will always be loved and remembered in everyone's hearts.

Is there a diabetes support group for kids he can join? Check at your local hospital or www.diabetes.org/ or www.diabetes.ca/

Try giving him some kool-aid.
And all you can tell him to do is pray.
Maybe get him to draw pictures or write things about how he feels.
