Braces hurt a little in the beginning. The wires cause tension on the teeth so you will have a few temporary toothaches. They arent unbearable and a couple of asprin should do the trick. Also, the inside of your lips will get a blister here and there at first but they will heal quickly and you will get used to it and wont feel pain there anymore.

After a short time, you wont feel pain from your braces at all. Each time you get them adjusted you might get some short lived discomfort but this is good because it means the braces are doing their job!

Before you get braces applied you get a teeth cleaning. Once your teeth are cleaned the orthodontist will apply some adhesive to your teeth and attach the braces. Once all the braces are attached then the wire is applied and adjusted and voila you are done.

Here is the best advice regarding braces. Keep them clean and do everything your orthodontist tells you to do. The more you follow the ortho's instructions the quicker you will have the braces removed. Keeping the braces clean reduces the risk of any gum damage or cavities. Either of those can slow down the process of having braces (and will make your breath and smile stink!)

In the end, once you get the braces removed you will be very happily surprised with the results I am sure. So do what you need to do!

Before my daughter got braces, there were x-rays, impressions and consultations. Then she got spacers put in the back between teeth for I think about a week. Then came brackets. Finally the wire.

Then she went monthly for a check up, and they could tighten the wire or make adjustments as necessary.
It is important to follow the tips they give you and not eat what you shouldn't!

Her mouth was sometimes sore. Motrin helped some. She also would get canker sores (or sometimes the bracket would cut into her lip/cheek at first) after adjustments. She used the products the Orthodontist recommended such as wax and a special solution to put on the sore. Also there is a toothpaste on the market for people who have sensitive mouths. I cannot remember the name, but your Orthodontist or his/her assistants can tell you. We used to get it at CVS. That helped her also. This was not all the time. In fact most of the time there were no problems or pain. Just the pain (in the butt) of brushing, brushing, brushing!

Remember to brush, even if you do not feel like doing a good job, or you will have crud buildup in between your brackets that turns yellow. Who wants that? Why risk a cavity for beautiful teeth?

Good Luck!

I've had braces. Twice. It does hurt, but it's not as bad as you might think. They usually start with putting "spacers" between your teeth so that they have room to put the metal around your molars. That probably hurts the most. I only hurt the day after I would have them tightened, and that didn't happen very often. And if your teeth are very crooked like mine were it's completely worth it. Plus you get to pick fun colors (like red and green for the holidays if you want). Have you considered Invisalign? I had that for my second "braces." The invisaligns don't work as well but they hurt a lot less and they are invisable (thus the name), though they are more expensive.

If I can remember correctly all they did to my mouth prior to getting my braces (years ago mind you!) was measure my mouth and then do impressions.....Where they mix that nasty gunk together and mix into mouth pieces and make you bite down into it to get molds of your teeth before, etc.

The part where they put the braces on doesn't hurt, so don't worry at all! If anything maybe afterwards when you get really hungry you won't want to eat anything but soft foods or soups because that's when you may have some discomfort for a couple of days or so, but not anything excrutiatingly painful. GOOD LUCK HUN!

well my first appointment was xrays and then the mold thingy then my next one they had to pull 2 of my teeth(only cuz i had a teeth in my gums that need to have room to come down) then i got spacers where they put between your teeth so you have room for the braces then you actually get the braces where you have to keep your mouth open for about 20 minutes and if you get your teeth wet with spit thay have to take the glue off and start over(and the glue taste nasty) then you get your braces tightened every month from then on untill your teeth are where they are supposed to be'
whatever you do, dont eat ice! my teeth hurt now and i think its cuz of the ice i had earlier! dont eat caramel and i think you should get yogurt in case your teeth are really sensitive and you need soft food, and only sugarfree gum

Yes they are very sore for about the first 2 weeks you have them. The inside of your mouth with get all cut up until you get used to the braces. Sorry to scare but Im just telling you the truth. They will take xrays and molds of your teeth before getting braces. That's about all.

No it doesn't hurt until about an hour after you get them on. then it hurts from anywhere to 1 day- 1 week depending on your pain tolerence.

I suggest sticking to a soup..pudding..ice cream..yogurt..apple sauce..mashed potato diet till your teeth feel better

Before they put your braces on they put this gnarly contraption in your mouth to keep it open and then they clean your teeth and dry them really good

the worst part of getting your braces on during the entire process is the glue when they apply it to keep the brackets on...just cuz it tastes horrible.

braces stink - yah it hurts when you first get them, and every time they adjust them.
before you get them you usually hafta go through a process of expanders and elastics and other stuff to prep your teeth.
The braces procedure is really wierd - they put like glue on your teeth and stick the metal onto it and then use like a heat gun to dry it and it tastes so gross.

Well Im sure Ive scared you enough.

Good Luck and think of the end result - perfect teeth!!!!

well first they determine,if you need braces, then they take measurements by putting some mirrors in your mouth to see in all sides, then they take molds, (they have you bite down on some clay like material) then they check for gingivitis (by measuring your gingiva depth)then after that they put them on. a very simple procedure actually, first they put lip separaters,so you don't interfere, then they get he brackets, put glue on the back stick it on your teeth and use a light to harden them, then after that they thread the wire through and your done!(also if i were you id buy some ib prophen, don't worry the braces only hurt for a limited time)
