My cat stays mainly indoors and is a healthy weight. He's eight (nearly nine) now and i don't want him to die. We're closer than you'd think. He's helped me through some tough times and i just don't want him to go. He's really part of the family now and i get a little sad when i see a few gray hairs shining through his coat. I've looked after him since he was a kitten (after he was abused by his previous owner) and we're like best buddies, he always sleeps on my bed at night and even smiles at me (no matter how strange that sounds).

Just tell me the average lifespan for the type of cat i described (mainly indoors cat) and what you think was the longest living cat - if you would. Thanks.

It's a damn shame it's inevitable he'll be visiting the end before i, but i'll cherish the time i have left with him.

I've only known one cat who lived over 21. My experience w/ indoor cats is that they've lived approximately 17 - 19 years. You can tell when they are getting old because their muscles atrophie thus they become thinner and weaker even though perfectly healthy. Their eyes become duller and their fur looses its luster and looks like they aren't cleaning themselves much anymore. You can help by combing them more often. This process usually takes years and they're still your loving friend. It's only necessary to have them put to sleep if they're suffering (in pain).

In general a healthy indoor cat can live 20 plus years. After that, you might see some bodily functions start to deteriorate. (bladder control, eyesite, hearing, feeding issues)

If your cat stays healthy, you have many more years to love and cherish each other!!!

Given proper care, nutrition, and regular veterinary visits, a cat kept indoors can live as long as 21 years or more. (The average age of cats is 12-15 years) This is, of course, barring any serious medical conditions.

Oh I know what you mean, I lost my kitty in May & I was devastated. He also helped me through a lot of tough times. But, the good news is I don't think you have to worry about losing him for a long, long time! I've had 2 cats in my lifetime. One lived to be 22 & the other lived to be 20! Relax & enjoy your kitty...I hope you have many more wonderful happy years together!

The maximum is over 30 years. The average is 15-18 years. I've known several all-indoor kitties who made it to early 20's.

From my opinion, be it animals or humans we have to be happy in order to live long life. From my experienced my aunt's cat died at the age of 18yrs. and i've heard of stories which cats live longer than that. Keep your cat happy and clean. Good healthy diet is essential too for good health. If you can afford it bring him for medical check up once a year after the age of 10yrs to check for any symtoms that can bring poor health. *Smile* Stay happy!!!

the oldest cat on record was 38!!! Of course if your cat is indoor only, this will add years to his/her life. The average for indoor cats is 18-21 years.
