As long we we are in denial about a problem, a personality trait, or any real thing, we can't have any influence over it. For example, if you have a child with a trait you fear or hate, like, for example, mental illness, you won't be able to take effective action to modify that trait. Since the quote is from Jung, I would assume he's referring primarily to accepting that we all have a "dark side." If we understand and respect that dark side, we can incorporate it into a well-balanced personality. If we deny it or try to hide it, it will come out in harmful ways.

“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”
~ Reinhold Niebuhr quotes (American theologian, 1892-1971)
“Never think someone will be there forever...forever is a long time and time has a way of changing things.”
“Know your limits, but never accept them.”
“When defeat comes, accept it as a signal that your plans are not sound, rebuild those plans, and set sail once more toward your coveted goal.”
“The first precept was never to accept a thing as true until I knew it as such without a single doubt.”
~Rene Descartes quotes (French Mathematician, Philosopher and Scientist, 1596-1650)
"By identification it's accepted." ~MMK, that's what it means in a nutshell.

what i think it means is: if you accept or understand something it will be easier to change it. if you don't accept it it will be harder to change.
