A friend's family light one candle each day till there are eight. I've been taught it the other way around, from a full eight to a single candle. What's the difference and who's right?

the way we do it, is from one candle to eight.. because you want to represent the miracle of channukah, which is that the oil burned for eight days, so by the last day of channukah, or the eighth day, all the candles are still burning, so i think it's better to light them all on the last day.

i'm not sure who taught you to go from eight to one, but i'm jewish and i've certainly never heard of that method. the way i learned is that you light one the first night, two the second night, and so on until the eighth night when you light all eight candles.
