Here is some information quoted from a web source. I recall being taught Mary was a descendant of David as a youth, but have not recall of where that people teaching me found their information. I provide the quote below to help you answer your question with the quote passage from the Gospel of Luke that suggest a paternal link to David. Personally, as a born again Pagan who happen to study xtian Theology for four years of college including the original Greek language (That was after 12 years of xtian school with Bible/ Indoctrination class), I believe that xtains generally put way to much thought in to these question without considering self-reflection or the hypocrisy of the Catholic, fundamentalist and evangelic versions of these faiths. (See below the answer for examples.)
This may assist you with you question, and Good luck with your personal quest. May you fallow the words of Paul and work out you salvation with fear and trembing", not the confidence and self-righteous bluster of modern xtianity.
Quote:
"How may we reconcile Jesus' Davidic lineage with His birth from the Virgin Mary?
"Although we have no extant genealogy of Mary, Luke 1:32 alludes to her being in the line of David. Since, Jesus had no human father, Mary's lineage puts Him in the family of David. However, Matthew's Gospel shows the difficulty in this. He lists Joseph's lineage only, as Jewish custom dictates. Matthew traces Joseph back to David, but then states that Joseph is not Jesus' father. For Matthew, when Joseph named Jesus, he became His legal father and so assured Jesus' place in the Davidic line. In either case, the evangelists saw no contradiction between Jesus' Davidic lineage and His birth from a Virgin."
"Luke 1: 32
He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father,"
Examples of hypocrisy:
The Bible:
Matthew 22:39 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' -
The hypocrisy:
Hate gays - Catholic, fundamentalist, and Evangelical xtianity
The Bible:
Suffer the little children . . ."
and More Bible:
"Whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believed in me, it were better for him that millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea." Matthew 18:6
The hypocrisy:
Allow priest to rape children and then move they parish to parish to cover it up, while sending the rapist priest letters of accommodation - then spend millions in legal defense and P.R. for the leaders that allowed this. The move and promote that leader to Rome where he sits on many important boards in the Vatican. - Catholic xtianity.(Doubt it- research Father Porter, Cardial Law, and The Diocese of Fall River Ma.)
The Bible:
Be kind to your enemies. Do good to those who hate you.
And more Bible:
"Thou shalt not bear false witness."
The hypocrisy:
Support President Bush while he lies and bomb people in Iraq . Is that doing good to the people that hate you? Catholic, fundamentalist, and Evangelical xtianity
I have plenty more if you don't get the point.

According to Matthew 1:16 and Luke 3:23, Joseph is the descendant of David (moreover, neither agree on who Joseph's father was). If Jesus was not Joseph's son, but the son of the Hebrew god, how does this make Jesus a descendant of David? For that matter, why isn't Mary's geneology listed?

Isaiah 9:1-7
The birth of Christ was prophecied in the book of Isaiah that a child would be born to sit on the Throne of David. That there would be no end to His rule.

In Jewish law, heir-ship came through the male line. Showing the genealogy from David through Joseph gave Jesus legal right to the throne of David.

because the lineage based in the twelve tribes of israel follows patrilineal descent. this means that all the kings of judah from david onward were descended from one man-perez, the son of judah, the son of jacob, etc. also, women did not rule, except for atalia, and she killed the other contenders for the throne and took over the kingdom, and it was eventually wrested from her and restored to the rightful king. this is why the messiah will be a MALE (so he can rule) descendent of the line of David.

Show me a verse that gives Mary's lineage. If you read the genealogies as they are, you will have no reason to believe that one is Mary's other than the fact that people have told you to believe that. That interpretation is just not supported by the text itself.
In Judaism, you always go by the father to determine someone's tribe. The mother only determines if the child is Jewish.

I'd like to know your source for Mary being of David's lineage. The only substantial evidence of the bible states that she is of the lineage of the Levites, whether she was of David's line is questionable.

Read the genealogy in Matthew. It follows Jesus family tree through Joseph. He was "of the house and lineage of David". Both sides of the family.

In the Bible it says the a decendant will come from a seed , meaning male sperm, when the Bible started to talk about the Messiah thousands of years before Jesus came and it said that he wouldn't come from seed, it baffled theologians for years and years and it wasn't until certian prophets who came and said that the Messiah will come from a virgin.
