Cats have different preferences, but all of the cats I've known have liked their bottoms to be secure. Make sure one arm or hand is underneath their back feet. That leaves your other hand free to scratch under their little chins.

Some cats don't like to be picked up and will put out their claws.. but I've found the best way to pick up a cat is...
At the same time put your hand or even bottom part of your forearm under the belly and then use your other arm to pick him/her up from the butt.... you don't want to put too much pressure on the belly otherwise i'm sure it's uncomfortable, so make sure the butt area is secure. That didn't sound too descriptive, but that's how i pick up my cat. Then if the cat is comfortable you can kind of gracefully lay the cat in your arms so that the cat is on it's back and literally cradle the cat in your arms upside down.
Good luck

Put one hand under the cat's armpits, along it's ribcage. Lift a little bit, so it's paws raise off the ground. Then take your other hand and place it on the cat's back, towards the tail, and scoop that hand up and under, so that hand is supporting the cat's butt, but the tail is covering up the... errr... bum-crack.
Now lift higher and hold the cat close to you, so you don't have to worry about dropping it if it struggles.
You should be able to do this in one fluid motion after a little practice, especially if the cat trusts you.

Depends on the cat. My female likes to be held like a baby while my male likes to be held just cradled but not on his back. Some cats won't even tolerate being held at all.

both of my cats like to be held like a newborn baby, not laying on their backs but in an upright position. their front paws just kinda drape over my shoulder. sometimes, my male, likes to sit across on my shoulders, like a rich woman would wear a boa type of deal. ill have a head to my right and a behind to my left... or visa versa. my little girl hasnt figured this out yet, so i just keep her held up like a newborn and she is content.

I don't own a cat, but I believe you put your arm under the cat's chest, with your other on its rump, holding it to yourself is best.

It varies from cat to cat. They'll let you know how they want to be held...if they like to be held.
