This coughing causes him to spit up part of the contents. Like he gets water down his wind pipe. I have raised the water dish and that seems to help or if I stop him from drink to much helps. Is this a common problem with miniture poodles? Any ideas on correcting the problem?

no it is not a common problem with any breed dog. he could have blockage in his throat. sometimes when a dog drinks in a hurry they will do this, but is should not be the norm. i would strongly suggest taking him to vet for a check up. tell vet exactly what you have stated in your question here.

Lots of dogs do this. Try giving him less water, and maybe put a rubber ball in the water. That way, when he drinks, he has to be careful or else he'll have a ball going down the wrong way!

Dogs are very possesive, and your dog might be much too eager to drink the whole bowl before you get a share of it. =) (Not like that's going to happen, but dogs tend to think so.) Try giving your dog less water so the speed-drinking will be less intense.
