I have dirty blonde hair. What do you think of gold highlights? Or do you have any suggestions?

I had my hair dyed medium brown and put in a darker blonde for highlights and they faded so much that they looked bleach blonde. Don't go with anything too light because they will fade to a lighter color. My hair is naturally blonde so I figured blonde highlights would look good, now they're so yellow I regret it.

It is hard to know what you are describing, as people have different definitions of dirty blonde and gold.

If you want a natural look, you should consider going a few shades lighter than your natural color. I'd suggest starting slow with your highlights, you can always go more dramatic the next time.

If you're planning to do it yourself, have a friend help you find your current color at the drugstore, using the little swatches, then pick out a kit that would give results a shade or two lighter.

If you can't afford to get it done at a salon, the next time you go in for a haircut, ask your stylist for advice on what color highlights would look best. Then using, their advice, go to the drugstore and buy your own!

Dirty Blonde hair usually looks great with highlights but the color family depends on your natural color. Beige, Ash or Cool Highlights might look as nice/nicer as Gold or warm highlights - it will depend on the color of your natural hair. Its hard to answer questions like this online becuase we cant see your skin coloring, your acutal hair color, etc... Everyone sees color differently. What I see as gold you may not, and vice versa.... What I can do is offer some info and possible suggestions.
Highlights are streaks that are no more than 2 shades lighter than you NATURAL (or colored) hair color... Anything more than 2 shades is not really considered a true highlight and wont look natural..Highlights are definately the way to go for first time color clients. Its a nice way to ease into hair color.
Coloring your hair is a commitment so be sure you are ready to keep up with it - highlights are usually easier to grow out if you dont want to keep them, versus all over color, or the chunkier techniques. Roots are usually kept to a minimum when you lightly hightlight your hair. The more you do the more roots you will have when it grows out. Starting slow enables you to figure out the color and the amount that will work for you...

I alway suggest a stylist when coloring your hair - wierd things can happen and if you do it at home and make a mistake and ruin your hair color - then going to a stylist will cost alot more after the fact.. on top of the cost of the products you used at home now you will have the salon costs and most will charge you for Corrective Hair Color which is a much more expensive service (corrective color STARTS $50 higher then regular color services at my salon ) not to mention it may be extremely damaging to your hair if several processes are involved to correct what you did at home. If it goes wrong at the salon (which rarely happens) then the stylist has the know-how and the products on hand to correct the problem quickly... and it wont normally cost you a corrective hair color service price either.....
the most important thing is to find out what color your hair acutally is (the level and the tone) Is it warm or cool, do you want hightlights or chuncks, or all over color.. Ask a stylist for some suggestions - she can uses color swatches to find all this info for you and it will help you visualize the outcome. :)
hope this helps you make some choices and decisions.

Yes i think gold highlights would look cute but you might want to try just dyeing your hair pure blonde and then do the gold highlights.

Personally i dont like gold. My hair was blonde unti li dyed it ahhhhh. But you could try using a colour enhancing shampoo and conditioner, pantene and sunsilk make them, i cant think of any others atm. That might look after the whole colour, cleans it up and helps it glow. I'm also against bleach/peroxide or re-dying my hair blonde. That is so stupid if you want your hair your natural colour you dont achieve it by dyeing it.. but that's for another discussion.

I think that'd look good. If you want darker-looking hair try light brown highlights. If you want lighter-looking hair, I think those gold highlights would brighten it up.

you could bleach it....of course that wouldn't look so great either. um, i guess you should just keep it the way it is, maybe add in a few curls here and there. best of luck!
