Mess is one thing, filth is another. People immediately recognize the difference. Tell them, "It was spotless 2 hours ago, too bad you missed it"!

I have used this line... "oh hi! You caught me right in the middle of cleaning up a bit... come on in, I hope you don't mind the mess too much, we had a late night"... and if you're really picky about the mess, then talk a clean, talk and clean... pick up the big stuff that are in the way and you'll be fine. But the other person is right, as long as your bathroomis clean, you'll be ok. And if you have two bathrooms, don't let the people from your party into one of them so it's spotless for your surprise visitors to use the next day.

No ones home is spotless all the time, especially when you have kids that have friends over quite a bit (which I do) and I've learned that my house usually looks worse to me than the people coming over. I usually apologize for the mess and say when the guests ask how I am I say really busy keeping up after the kids and start picking up around them. I figure if they are going to pop in unannounced they are going to have to understand they are interupting what I was doing and get over any mess they have to look at. Chances are they have the same kind of mess at their house. I've visited plenty of people that have dishes in the kitchen, toothpaste stuck to bathroom sink, and papers and pop cans on the table.

Just apologize for the mess. If they're nice people, they should understand that you can't have a clean house 24/7. Especially if they just pop over unannounced (which some might consider rude).

Keep thigs clean and simple.Place all clutter in a huge trashbin or cardboard box and hide everything in the garage. Clean/ vacuum only where you'll know guest will appear. Clean bathrooms with baby wipes or clorox wipes. Assign a person to cover an area and when the guess come in it'll be ready.

answer the door, tell them you are glad to see them, but you wished they had called first and that you are unable to entertain them. Then close the door. Its your house, you don't have to let people in.

Just about everyone has a cell phone, people need to call before stopping in on someone.

Sooner or later most people get the hint.

You owe no one any excuses for the non invite on a pop in! Sorry and good bye.

First of all it's their fault for popping over without prior notice. So if they come to a messy house, too bad for them.

Secondly, if you want to make sure your house is neat and clean to accomodate such pop-ins, always clean your house before you go to sleep. Keep everything in their places and keep surfaces clean. Keep the kitchen and bathrooms clean at all times.

Clean up before you get to sleep. In any other case, simply ask to be excused for the mess as they do what they need to do, say for a bathroom break or the like. If they just want to sit for company for a bit, tell them it's not exactly appriopriate with the state of the place.

Oh, don't worry about it! Do what I do: Leave the vacuum in the middle of the front room and maybe have a can of Pledge with a rag on it somewhere nearby. THAT WAY when people stop by, you can be all like, "Oh, I'm sorry you caught me CLEANING!" :) Gets 'em every time!!

My MIL thinks all I do is clean....

chances are that if you were to pop over to their house unannounced you'd find the same thing....no need to apologize or try
to cover up....just know that everyone has a messy house once in awhile and just be grateful that you have people that like spending time with you in your home!!

On my way to answering the door, I take the vacuum cleaner and place it in the middle of the floor and spread out the cord (making it look like I was just ready to vacuum)...then when I answer the door it looks like I am right in the middle of cleaning...most of my company notices the "just about to be used vacuum" right away...of course I say something to the order of...oh you caught me cleaning...
