It sounds like a hangnail. It's no big deal. Just a part of skin that's been torn away somehow. It may be a bit painful for a day or two but will heal quickly if you don't pull on it.

i have that on the top knuckle of my middle finger. it might be because that might be where you hold a pen/pencil when you write. my suggestion is to get pen/pencil grips, not only are the comfy but they might reduce the swelling and help ur finger heal!

sounds like an infection, you should see your primary doctor or just go to a clinic if you don't have your own doctor. good luck in your travels, it hurts I know. Mine was from a paper cut, been around paper latley?
