Hello:
Before I became a physician, I had to do drug tests when I worked at a hospital. Basically they give you a urine cup that has a thermometer taped to the side so when you urinate it should be body temperature. If you give it to them and its cold, then they know you faked the urine. It is essentially a dipstick test just like when you go to the doctor to get a urinalysis. It is called a drugs of abuse panel and tests for THC, Cocaine, Opiates (ie. percocet), Amphetamines (speed), Benzodiazepines (ie. valium or xanax), PCP (angel dust). Sometimes the test will also check for ecstasy but that would generally make the amphetamine part of the test positive. All of the above drugs leave your system pretty quickly, ie within a week except for thc. That one will stay around for up to one month and will show up on the drug screen.
Most employers use the urine method because it is inexpensive. The blood test is very very expensive but much more accurate, but most employers just use the urine screen to save money.
I hope this helped answer your question.
Regards,
Warren Shaffer, M.D.
