I am not American so educate me on this please:)
What marks as a sign to indicate a couple are seriously dating? Asking the girl out on a date?or holding hands or what?

In order to determine if you are in a serious or committed relationship you will need to have one of those special talks about not seeing other people. You will mutually have to come to some sort of agreement about the status of your relationship.
1 date = "I went on a date with her once..."
2 dates = "I went on a couple of days with her..."
3 dates = "We dated a little bit..."
More than 3 = dating regularly, not yet serious but could potentially become serious.
All of this, of course, depends on the couple. :0

Dating is the same as asking the girl out. Dating means that both of you went out together and no interference from friends and family. Dating occurs when couple express their feeling and shares their personalities together during their outing. holding hand and kisses occurs when the couple are comfortable and accepted each other. the first date is usually just a trial run, by the third date means you are going out together and usually after a time you are dating as in girlfriend/boyfriend.

Holding hands and continual eye contact is a good indicator. However; the best rule of thumb is what your heart tells you and not necessarily what it is he is wanting to hear. So until that happens enjoy each others company.
