I want to use the multi- color in the background, do I string them on the back branches or up the trunk. which looks the best, I can go either way white as background with multi out front, or all white with multi as back ground.

As long as they plug into each other you need to plug them in and make sure they reach a plug or an extension cord. Then start at the bottom and go up the tree. I'd preffer them mixed but go up the tree however you want the light colors, inside or out then come down the tree with the other color. Remember it will take more length to go on the outside than in the middle, it's wider.
Good luck

Wrap each of them in oposing helixes opposite of one another starting from the top (get a ladder) they will plug in at the base. This will give you the x pattern from all sides.
