When they are spending time unsupervised away from you and school.
I would get one with GPS and have it linked to grades. I would also get one without texting and ringtones.

I received mine when I went to college, but my sister and brother got theirs when they turned sixteen and started to drive a lot. That said, it truly depends on your child. If they are spending a lot of time independently and are able to use it responsibly, I would say 13 or 14. However, it's very aggravating to see a lot of preteens and young teenagers with cell phones in stores, restaurants, and the street acting irresponsibly. Make sure to teach your child good cell manners, and their age will not matter.

When they start leaving the house to go places. I'd say 6th grade. There is nothing more annoying than seeing a kid younger than me with a cell phone. It makes you think no wonder the kids are so respectful these days, parents give them whatever they want.

My son paid for his own cell at 14. He worked a summer job and saved his money for it. We added him to our calling plan and he babysits his younger siblings when ever I need him to in order to pay his monthly bill for his phone. I would say, that as long as he's old enough to pay for it himself and follow through with the rules you set down, then the age is up to you.

you should ask yourself "why does my child need a cell phone?" I got a cell phone when i started middle school, like 13, because my Mom believed what if something happen to me or i needed her or something along those lines!!! so you need to ask yourself that question and then you will get your answer!!

My daughter was 13, she needed it because both my husband and I leave way before she catches her bus in the morning for school. This was my way of making sure she was safely on the bus every morning. So it all depends on the purpose of having the phone.

14, if they're responsible enough. You have to watch them every year and see how responsible they become. Then you can decide. 14 is usually a good age because they go out alone more so you can call them and check up on them...make sure they're safe.
