I don't know about where the reference is, but a Muslim that I used to know Hated dogs. He said they were dirty like pigs, and that he wasn't supposed to touch them, just like pigs (which aren't actually dirty either).
He would have to cleanse himself later if he came in contact with a dog, or even sometimes dog hair from some person.
I don't know if it is universal in Islam, but he kinda made it sound like it was.
Edit - Thank goodness that isn't the case, after reading some of the other answers, I see it isn't so universal.

no theres nothing wrong in having dogs as pets. But, you cant let them in ur home coz the house of a muslim is considered a holy place for one to peform prayer. And dogs are dirty in the sense that they drull their saliva. So, u can hav them sa pets as long as you dont let them inside and also touch their saliva and also whn their fur is wet. If you did, u have to perform the `samak` which is washing part of your skin exposed to the wet dog with 1 parts soil water and 6 parts clean water.
dogs are unclean because they carry disease and dirty habits such as eating garbage etc. All animals are to be treated with care & love in Islam.

I've read very weird answers here.
Anyway... No Muslims DO NOT eat dogs, that's disgusting.
Muslims can have dogs as pet as long as they do not allow them into their homes.
The reason:
A Muslim house is more of a pure place where a Muslim can pray in, and allowing dogs in can decrease the amount of cleanliness in the house. Example, dogs run around everywhere and can step in the house with unwanted dirt. (simply because you can't control the animal).
Why Muslims must wash after a dog:
The animal itself is not dirty, but it's drool is. Dog's drool is consider unclean in Islam for many reasons one of them is that it carries many bacterias.
A Muslim must wash after touching dog's drool, or being touched by it.
How to wash:
A Muslim rubs off the drool with clean sand once, then washes it seven times (simply pouring water on the place 7 times).
Islam has nothing against the dog itself, but against it's drool. and that is only for mankind's sake.
Matter of fact, Muslims can use dogs for hunting as long as they 'thakey' the pet (meaning, purifying the pet). That is done by saying "bism Allah, Authakeyh" The phrase means.. "by God's name I purify you".
Hope that helps.
Peace.

The man above me obviously has never read the Quran.
Muslims have to keep their prayer areas clean. Sometimes sites do go overbroad, Islam is common sence. But I guess that are being informative.

I'm muslim and I love my dog! Islamic law forbids us to eat them, so they're safe. Although, I have to put him in another room while praying, otherwise he'll start licking my ears once I take my head to the ground.

Yup, it does. The Quran? stated that dogs are also unclean creatures, like the pig. Any contact with dogs or their saliva must be cleansed by vigorus scrubbing, close to removing one's skin.
There's a case in my country where a muslim saw a taxi having a dog. She wrote in to the taxi company and requested that all its fleet must undego thorough cleaning to prevent the muslims from unknowingly, breaking the syriah laws.
I've never read the Quran, but I basing my answer from the fact that most muslims get their religious practices from the Quran, much like the Christians get theirs from the bible. The case I mentioned was also reported in the papers and not from my imagination.
Its up to the interpretation of the teachings. The muslims in my country would even stay away from dogs, not even pet them. Coz its impossible to get near some dogs, without them getting their saliva on them.
But i guess this comes form the fact that pets aren't normally kept at home in the ancient times. Similarly, the dogs of old wanders around near trash and their saliva are known to carry all sorts of dieases. Same withthe pigs, as they are fed with mostly leftovers, unlike the other life stock. They would carry or transmit more dieases than the other animals
