No, not at all. Too many people buy into the television version of family when I really think it rarely exists. My older brother passed away a year and a half ago, I had only seen him twice in the previous dozen years or so. My younger brother is an alcoholic and we rarely see one another, mostly only when Mom forces it. Be with who you enjoy being with. But, you should at least keep in touch by phone. Once they're gone, and sometimes its when they are way too young, its too late.

Is there a reason you don't like to be around them? Is there a way you can gain a closer relationship with them?
It's not weird, but it does show that you are not close as a family.
I have little to do with my brother because he beat me up daily when I was a child and left in his care. He abused his first wife, and is now living with a woman who is a drug addict. She once stole pain medication from our elderly father and he had lyme disease so his pain was severe given his age and other illnesses.... and this woman stole the medicine so he had no relief from the pain! It was a narcotic drug... not something he could go out and buy more of. My brother stuck by her side through that and is still with her. So.... no.... we are not close.
We talk now and then, but don't have any real relationship.
What's your reason? It would be good if you figured that out and if possible built a stronger relationship with your family.
Best Wishes,
Sue

I would ask yourself and answer honestly why you dread being around your family. If there is no real reason except you don't like being around them then that is weird. If there is no reason except that you don't like them make the best of it because family is more important then any friends. They do say " You can pick and choose your friends but you are stuck with your family".

Blood is not always thicker than water, if it is bad blood. Some families teach independence and emotional distance because they cannot deal with being family. These are exceptional, and often die out within a couple of generations.

lol. same here. I don't think it's weird, i just think family can be overbearing sometimes, and you just want a break from them. I would rather be with my friends than my family. My friends are more like me than my family is.
