Some parents do it in the case of extreme disrespect, but in my opinion it's never acceptable. I think it's even illegal.

The Supreme Court in Canada released some guidelines a few years ago, in response to parents claiming the right to discipline their children physically. Spanking was strongly discouraged.

However, generally, you likely won't be convicted of assault if:
- the child is over the age of two but not yet a teenager (kids under two don't have the developmental capacity yet to learn from spanking, so it's pointless and therefore cruel)
- you do not strike the child in the face or any other sensitive area that could do damage
- you do not strike the child with any object (brush, stick, hanger, wooden spoon, etc.)
- you do not leave a mark on the child's skin (this is the biggie - police or CPS or CAS or F&CS or whoever investigates child abuse, can take action against you if you strike hard enough to leave a mark)

No it is not acceptable, the viens in the gums and inside the cheek are very fragile, even in adults, and slapping children in the face can cause serious problems with the teeth and gums. You are right, it is illegal.

That's what bottoms are for. If the child is too old to spank, other means of punishment besides a "slap in the face" are more effective and acceptable.

i think it depends if they do it many times or not.

ive been hit twice during my life. both times on the face.
from being hit across the face i learned not to do stupid things that would get me into trouble.
i didnt come out as some sad child or anything. im a straight a student graduating highschool two years early this year and i attend a private school in new york. i plan on going to harvard or university of chicago next fall.
does my life sound like a horrible thing to you because of being hit across the face twice? i was disrespectful and lied to my mother. and wen you get to the age of 15, you are a bit too old to be bending over your mother's knee.

It's NEVER acceptable. That is such a far cry from a spanking. Although unless the child is very very young, I doubt it's considered abuse----unless it's used as a standard form of punsihment.

exactly in only in extreme disrespect and parent should slap their children on their hand or spank their child whenever they done wrong. children need to learn from their mistakes and shouldnt do it again.

With my kids we showed a lot of love, just showing them that they disappointed us worked well enough, we never once hit our kid, time outs and stuff like that worked just fine, or if they were looking forward to something, like going fishing or skating or something like that, those were the best things to keep them in line, by telling them that unless they are good, they won't get to go, there was never a problem.

I have threaten to do it but have never actually slapped either one of my kids. You kinda want to sometimes. I have rinsed out their mouthes with soap when they are disrespectful. I find that works really well.

Sometimes parents get out of hand, but that's completely uncalled for! Slapping a kid will only make them either hate you more or be afraid or you.

Not at all. I think it is a very disrespectful and hurtful thing to do. There is never any reason for that.
