If hes not fixed, fix him. Second, don't keep your dog chained up outside. Its just asking for trouble, from people and from animals, your dog is basically defenseless and has to defend himself. Either keep him inside, or have a fence put up, or at least a kennel for him. Chaining your dog (besides the other animals and people problem) makes life stressful for him - dogs are "family" animals, they need to be with their pack, and when you force him to stay chained outside, you are ailenating him from your family. If, for any reason he does have to be chained up (can jump over fences) then he must be supervised every second he is outside, not just for his safety, but for other people, and other animals.

I have an aggressive male dog that I worry about also ... you really need to consider a fenced kennel with a dog house. If he is getting off his chain, you have to consider other options ... kennel, chain or invisible fences.

The most important question is can I afford this dog if he continues to be aggressive. I am always alert, I have my dog in a contained yard, and even with that I am still worried. Vet's have told me that he is an aggressive dog and there is nothing I can do ... it is a behavior that cannot be modified.

The hardest thing to do when you love an animal is to do what is best for you ... you need to think smart and realize you will have risks. The best thing to is minimize those risks.

Just a few thoughts ... good luck on this - love for an animal is unconditional!

First, a dog kept on a chain does not get enough exercise, and is prone to becoming more territorial, and therefore more aggressive. Please check out dogsdeservebetter.com.

Second, and even more importantly, be sure he is neutered. An intact male dog is going to want to roam, to mark territory, to protect territory from other dogs, and to mate. He will also be more at risk for illness, including testicular cancer.

Third, if he is out in the yard, whether on a chain or in a fenced area, he is not part of YOUR pack, and is not being socialized. Presumably you want a companion dog. He can't learn how to become one out there.

Neuter him, walk him, and make him part of your family. Then start training.

Good luck.

Sounds like you haven't had him spayed or neutered or whatever the proper term is. Until you have that done, you can expect his fighting with other dogs all his life-long. I have two male dogs, one spayed/neutered and the other not, and I can tell you that the one not spayed is always, and I mean always ready to assert his territorial rule, especially over the other male dog. He has firmly taught the other male dog, younger but bigger, the "pecking order", and the younger dog does not challenge him, and still gets barked at and growled at by the non-neutered one, even though the younger one is bigger and healthier. Hormones I guess. God Bless you.

First, if you lived in my state, it is illegal to chain up a dog.... we put you guys in jail!!!!! And it is your neighbors who will turn you in!
Secondly, build him a fenced yard.
Thirdly, get him castrated. In my state, if your dog is running free, and picked up, we charge you a ton of cash. And in my state, if you abuse a dog, you go to jail after your trial. (Oh, yes, hon, there is a trial, and chaining a dog is an automatic fine, big time!!!!

Wise up honey. If you or your parents can't afford the dog, take out a loan for that fence, you can get a job after school, or find someone who can properly care for him. They are just like children, and many are as smart as a 6 year old kid.....

Go to a hardware store and get a good chain not some cheap dog chain. Get a good clamp that screws into a circle not snaps in place. Angkor it to some thing solid that's buried in the ground.like a step railing or a deck railing. Just be careful that the other dogs aren't coming up and attacking your dog tied he can't defend himself real good. April g say she lives in a state where you can't tie a dog out wish I new wat state that was because I don't believe it

I would suggest sending him to a trainer... they will work wonders and make him understand it's not OK to attack other animals..plus he'll be on a mini-vacation and get to spend some time around other dogs and end up used to it by the time he's ready to come home.

Although it can be expensive, you still get to keep the dog you've grown attached to.

Good Luck!

Considering I got a couple thumbs down responses already, I figured I would add that you could get him a shock collar. The one my dog was trained on has 5 levels (each one you could try on yourself..it's more of a "bug bite" each slightly higher to remind him certain commands - like "come" and "sit" "stay" etc..) All of those commands with a slight reminder will get him listening and will keep him away from trouble with his aggression. It will condition him to understand that when he attacks or does something wrong he'll get a "bug bite" and he'll learn to stop.
(My dog was trained with this and I don't even need the buzzer anymore - he's perfect and I can walk him in the city of Chicago without a leash on.) Sorry to those giving me thumbs down -- but if you met my dog you'd see how happy he is now that he understands what makes his owner happy.

Good luck with your problem and e-mail if you'd like information on the trainer we sent him to.. she works wonders

Turn him into a house dog...or tighten his collar....a fence maybe? or try the mythical task of getting him fixed. Probably won't change his demeanor. I know my male is just as aggressive w/o his jewels. Best wishes...
