that is my opinion, because that is way to messy to try this late at night.

probably only a miniscule probability of it landing butter side down more than landing butter side up due to the weight of the butter, but then sometimes the bread goes soggy and sags through, which would throw the weight towards the unbuttered side, if not balancing it.
How much you butter the bread would be a factor,
what type, size, and shape fo the bread used would also affect outcome.
It's not either or, merely probability for any given set of variables.
Is this too much answering for a silly question?

According to Murphy's law, the chance of it landing buttered side down is directly porportional to the cost of the carpet.
Cheap carpet ($50), it lands butter side up, Persian Carpet ($5,000,000) it lands butter side down.
