Shiites believe that Ali should have become the third caliph and that the title should be reserved to the family of the prophet. sunnis do not support this, and supported the umayyad caliphs after the death of the prophet. the umayyads were actually once enemies of the prophet, so this naturally caused controversy.

as time passed, the small difference of opinion expanded to include emotional attachment and spiritual arrogance.

so there really wasnt that big of a difference, honestly. i have no idea why we cant all just get along.

they started as one family and became divided over power and righteousness. one believed more one way and the other another. this is how it was explained to me by a muslim family i questioned when planning their sons wedding.

One group believes Imams must be descendants of the pro mo (flames of hell be upon him).

The other group believes Imams can be from any descendancy.

As you can see, their hate for one another is perfectly justified.
