There are regional American dialects, but even within those dialects, there are variations. Here's a link to a really cool map that helps you learn about American dialects:

enjoy!
By the way, in basic terms, dialects are identified when there are recognizable and consistent variations from "the norm" across a region or culture. Dialectologists look at words and word forms, pronunciation, and grammar.

Social scientists estimate the number of varieties of American English range from a basic three - New England, Southern and Western/General America - to 24 or more. Some researchers suggest the number is actually much higher!

I'm not sure about dialects vs. accents. I know there is a Southern drawl and Northern accent. People in California speak a little different I think. You can tell a New England acent, Boston and New York as well. Not sure. Can't wait to see more answers.

This is a link to a really interesting Harvard dialect survey. They asked over 120 questions to people across the US on how they pronounced certain words or what word they used for a particular thing (example: a carbonated beverage is called: soda, coke, pop, etc..) There are maps showing what areas of the US pronounced things what way. I don't know if this is an exact answer to your question but it's really interesting information.

I am from Greenvile.South Carolina. and its interesting that every little town has there on way and sound in the way they talk.. I have gone door to door sales for about 20 years and its true that the Southern accent or brogue. changes a little bit from town to town. The way Lady's especially from Charleston talk is just wonderful. I could listen to them talk all day..I am collecting Southern sayings.have about 1200 of them so far.such as to back a letter. means to address it.You come to see us all sometime now you hear?and Merry Christmas
