Anytime you magnify or upscale a lower resolution video signal to a higher resolution video signal, the video artifacts will show and the image will get pixelated.

Standard definition is 480i or 640x480. Stretch that to 1280x720 or 1920x1080, you are going to see all the noise.

That is why a regular tube TV will deliver a better picture than a HDTV with a standard TV signal because a regular TV doesn't have to do any type of scaling with a standard tv signal.

If you ever taken a small tiny JPEG and stretched it to a larger resolution in Photoshop, same concept.

the picture stinks on any tv, it's just normal tvs don't show enough detail for you to notice. human eyes are easily decieved by blurred motion, etc. on a HDTV, the detail is way more intense and it's easier for us to notice how crappy tv really looks.

also, on big screen tvs it's even worse because the crappy picture is "blown up" so even more bad artifacts can be seen.
