Ticks are bugs that (depending on what type or how much blood they've had) vary a bit in size. They are usually circular and their legs are very small compared to their bodies. But hey, photos help better than words: http://www.deh.enr.state.nc.us/phpm/assets/images/autogen/a_tick_sizes.jpg

small spiders with a fat middle. If there is a white spot on them they may have rocky mount spotted feaver. Also, they have a very tough shell so if you try to smash them its very difficult to kill them. Usually lighting them with a lighter kills them.
