Many localities have a hotel room tax - this is an extra tax above the sales tax. The rationale is that people are staying in the locality, using local services, but wouldn't be paying other local taxes.

The tax rate is whatever the locality (the city or township, not the hotel owner) decides it will be, and it's different in different places.

Since each municipality that has this tax collects its own, there is probably no central place to find how much is generates overall.
