Ask them why they think you shouldn't have one.
Most parents try to do what they think is best for you. They might think you are too young or irresponsible to care for another living being. If so, then ask them how you can prove that you're ready to handle this responsibility.
It is possible that they just don't want a dog because they don't like dogs, or think it'll be too much of a mess in the house, etc. In that case, the first thing I said still applies. Ask them why they don't want a dog, then think of a way you can make them feel OK about it. For example, if they think the dog will be too messy, research the breeds, find a dog that you like that doesn't shed/slobber too much. Then convince them that you'll clean up after the dog every day, so it's not messy. Ask them to let you prove it by keeping your room, or kitchen, etc. clean.
Once your parents see that you are really committed to this and mature enough, they won't have a problem with this.
Good luck.

First of all you have to show your parents that you are responsible enough to take care of the dog. There is alot of care into dogs. It is just not feeding and walking it. You have to make sure you get its shots, bath it, clean up after the dog. But if you can show them. then maybe they will get you one. but show that you care and you can be responsible before getting one

convince them that you can care for it by caring for other dogs. volunteer at a shelter or walk dogs for people.
last one gets you money, but don't charge 20 bucks per dog. trust me, experience

Dogs are hard to take care of. My advice is to hold out until you realy think you can handle it, and if you do, get one at least 1 yr old.I have a lab pup, and he bites real hard. Get one of the smaller type. And get a kenel.

How old are you? How responsible are you? How good are your grades? How willing are you to care for it, feed it, pick up its feces, and pay for its vet bills and food? Are you willing to get a little job to do this? If you don't have good answers to these questions, my mom wouldn't get you a dog either.....

You have to convince them that they want one and that they would love to take care of it when you are not around.

Ask them. A lot. Then keep asking, and asking. Eventually they'll cave in. I did it and guess what my christmas present this year is: a dog.
