Three white men were captured by hostile Indians, and the chief decided to give them a chance to live. He brought them into a teepee and put a headband randomly on each of their heads. He had three white headbands and two red, and he picked three of them to be used on the men. He then put them into a line facing the same direction, so the last person could see the headbands of the two other men, the one in the middle could see the first guy's headband, and the first guy saw no headbands. (No one could see their own headband.) If any one of the men could correctly guess the color of their own headband, they would all be set free. Otherwise, they'd be killed. The men could not communicate with the others in any way or look backwards, etc. How did they escape?

Oh, and only one person can guess. If any one of them guesses wrong, they all get killed.

Rene C is closest so far...but assume no one says anything automatically. Also, you can't take them off, you can't see your own headband...here's a hint: you can tell a lot from the silence of other people.

Okay lets see...
Scenario one: The guy in the back sees that the two other guys have red headbands, and says white (since there are only two red headbands). They walk free.
Scenario two: The first guy (the one in the front) has a red headband, but the last guy says nothing, meaning he's in doubt. He would only be in doubt in this scenario if the second guys has a white headband, so the second guy, who realises this, says white. Walk free.
Scenario three: The first guy has a white headband, so the last guy says nothing, because he has doubts. The second guy says nothing, because the first guy has a white headband, so the silence of tha back guy doesn't help him. The first guy "hears" that the two others doesn't say anything, and says white (The color of the second guy doesn't matter, it yields the same result).
Did I forget a possible scenario?

I'm not good with ratios but 3 white out of 5 and 2 red out of 5 the chances of picking white out numbered any color because at least 3 had to be pick which assured a white headband was picked by the chief. Now the thinking in process....... one of them had to correctly guess their headband color and all would be free.........So I would say all the men should say white and their chances would be assured, because one of them had to have a white headband.

They took the headband off their head then told them the answer.
I got another one if the last guy doesn't say anything, that means the first two are both white, or both red and white. And if the second guy sees that the first guy is red he knows to say white, because if his were red also the last guy would have said white.

I'm probably so far from correct but here is my guess...If the guy in the back saw the other two men's headbands and they were both white...and he saw that the two head bands that they didn't use were red he'd know that his headband was white.....and vice versa w/ the red head bands..PSHHHH I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IS THE ANSWER!?!?
ok just read someone elses answer -one of them just took off their head band....the description didn't say they couldn't take them off but it did say they couldn't see their own head band so...hmmmmm

!!! i got it:
if the two in front were both red, then the third guy would shout out "white!" they would go free.
if the third guy did not shout out, that means he does not see two reds in front of him. He sees either a white and a white or a red and a white.
So the second guy - the guy in the middle knows only the headband of the guy in front of him. But if the 3rd does not shout out "white" , then he knows that his headband must be either red or white and if he sees a red on number one, then he (#2) would shout out WHITE and he would be correct because there wouldn't be two reds in the 1 & 2 postions.
THEREFORE, if the first fellow doesn't hear anything from either of them, the first guy has to shout out WHITE and it is correct.

You didn't say how many wrong answers there could be before one got it right. If each man gave one answer and the one in the back answered first...he could see the odds ...if the two in front were white, he would have a 66% chance of being correct if he guessed red. If the other two were red, he would have 100% chance of being correct if he said white. If the other two each had one red and one white, he would have a 66% chance of being right if he said white.
If he guessed wrong and the other two were listening and thinking they would know that depending on his answer they would run a great chance of success if they guessed the opposite...one of them would be right if they guessed his opposite. Three answers and one of them would have to be right.
Actually, all three of them could guess white and one of them would be correct as there are only two red ones. One would have the right answer.

if the first and 2nd is red then the 3rd will sure he is white and he will answer white.
If the first is red and the 2nd is white then the 3rd will not know what color then he will keep quiet . The 2nd will be sure he is white or else 3rd will answer white
If first is white then 2nd and 3rd is white or red then the 2nd and 3rd will not be sure what color and keep quiet. then 1st can answer white

One raised their eyebrows then quickly lowered and kept doing that until they worked down the head band enough to see its color.
ohhh, I just saw hollywood5281991's answer and it makes sense! the rules did not say you couldn't take them off!!
