“What kind of victory is it when someone is left defeated?”
- Mahatma Gandhi -

Violence does nothing but divide humanity against itself, increasing the bitterness and hatred that the factions have for each other...

How is violence a necessary thing? Gandhi acieved freedom through non-violence, Aung San Suu Kyi has brought attention to Burma, and Martin Luther King ended oppresion through non-violent protest...

And a victory where someone is left defeated is not a good victory because the animosity has not been ended. It is a temporary solution bought with the lives of human beings...

Gandhi was not a Hindu, he said that he was of all religions and none...

Non-violence is not pacifism, it means sacrificing your own life to give that child the time to escape...

The kind of victory of barbaric or savage people.
In the evolution of man the identities such as race, language, colour, religion, country etc should be left behind and the human being must emerge as a human being - not as the savage he is.
violence, bitterness hatred are because of individual craziness for power and money. He is no different from the savages who ate other human beings but not their own relatives and friends. Now he does not eat them but kills them through violence or otherwise.
The curse of the human race is the identity - not as a human being- but as of this country, this colour, this language, this religion etc. These labels are which make the human being into the most despicable animal. Even animals do not kill except to eat. The do not kill just because of some false concept - I am this or that.

In an overall sense, I agree. If I could stop all persecution between people, I would.

However, the fact is, there is persecution. And sometimes the only real way to solve it is by using violence against the persecutors. So for the moment, war is a necessary evil.

Unfortunate as it seems I regard world peace as a utopian pipe dream. I think it is totaly unobtainable and that the best we can do is keep the war turned down to a tolerable level. I guess that makes me an agonist.

Either way you are celebrating death and destruction.

It's a shame the western world doesn't have a better grasp on Gandhi's triumph in India. British historian Arnold Toynbee said of the situation, "Gandhi made it impossible for us to continue ruling India, but he made it possible for us to leave with dignity." That's the best kind of victory, one in which no one is humiliated or broken.

It is my opinion it is human nature to wage battle; hence there will always be victory and defeat. That said I do agree the concept of victory is very bias and completely dependent on the view point of the victorious.

The kind of victory that is left when someone is defeated is that they tried their best.

Violence doesn't only "divide humanity against itself", it also brings good movies and news.

So it's a "defeat" if I use violence to defend my children against someone who wants to do them harm? No, it's victory for innocence against evil.

Nonviolence as a principle is evil. If violence is the only way to defend the innocent, and you refuse to use it out of principle, it means you value the rights of malefactors more than the lives of the innocent -- and that's evil.

Love the quote. and I agree with it. Hatred only causes more hatred.

Your absolutely right.

There is no victory when someone is left defeated. The only victory, I think, is when you die you go to Heaven instead of Hell.
