Asked directly by Levin whether the U.S. is winning in Iraq, Gates replied, "No, sir." That response appeared to contradict Bush, who said at an Oct. 25 news conference, "Absolutely, we're winning."

Is Gates a hero?

Well maybe Gates was brought up not to lie.

I would be more inclined to believe Gates at this point in time. I believe that he and I think alike. To kill a snake the best way is to chop off it's head. Gates and I both know who the snake is in this whole mess,so once he convinces GWB what needs to be done and they do it, then we can say: yes, we are winning the war!

If you're curious as to who the snake is, it's Ahmadinejad. Who else!

Gates is no hero, we can' win a war that is not ours, the only hero's America has is our military men and women!

Because we're not winning. And as a US soldier it bothers the h*ll out of me that we pretend we are. I can deal with losing face, but to ignore the truth is ridiculous.

maybe. More closer to the truth, he wasn't part of the 'Group Think' self delusion that has been clouding the Senior Adminisrations' perception since the beginning.

Finally someone in this administration who knows truth from deliberate lying. Quite refreshing.

Because we can't win. Nor can we not win. We can be defeated though.

You people complain when they all agree and you complain when they disagree. There's no hope.
