well, christ handed his ministry down to his 12 apostles before he died. The apostles were jesus' homeboys ( went with him, learned from him). 10 of the apostles them went across the empire spreading the new teachings and way of jesus. WHile jesus was alive he officially handed down the head of his ministry to peter the apostle. the role of peter has been handed down today, now we know it as the pope.
