or do they look really fake? and do they actually heat up the house? and do you find the electric bill high?

Yes, I have one in my own home, and every year people complement me on how well I decorate it. But, my house is over 100 years old, and we have a chimney that leads to a small hole in the wall in the basement, where they would feed coal into it to keep the house warm. So, with the fake fireplace, and the chimney on the roof, they might not allways match up. They do surprisingly enough heat the house very well, and in the chicago winters we always have toasty toes. They don't raise the bill anymore then a conventual heater would, but it depends on if you leave it on all winter long, and what kind of electric fireplace you buy. They have those? I thought they only have gas, I used to have a gas one looked real but did a bad job of heating the house I have a real one now, much better at heating the house.

No. But I think they're better than no fireplace at all.
