I have a pomeranian, she was found stray by my boss. The vet says she is about 11 years old. She has always been a happy energetic dog considering her age. We also have a young golden retriever and they play together. Lately my pom wimpers when she runs up the stairs like it hurts her and holds up a leg, but when we touch her legs she is fine. Could it just be joint pain due to her age?

AS YOU DON'T HAVE NE HISTORY OF THE DOG I THINK YOU HAVE GOT 2 TAKE HER 2 THE VET AS IT COULD BE A OLD INJURY THAT HASN'T BEEN TREATED AND IS GIVING HER PROBLEMS NOW.
IT COULD JUST BE A BIT OF ARTHRITIS BECAUSE OF HER AGE BUT WHATEVER IT IT SHE'S IN PAIN N NEEDS 2 SEE A VET HE CAN GIVE HER SOMETHING 2 EASE HER PAIN

Wow, sounds like you scored on some really neat dogs! It's not often that you get a young big dog that plays with a tiny old dog. Cool!
She probably strained a muscle and it only pains her when she is outstretching it goin up the stairs.
It doesn't sound like it hurts her too bad or she would be crying all the time and when you touch it.
Give it a couple of days and try to get her to take it easy for those few days too. Like maybe carry her up the stairs. That way she won't mess it up any worse and then run up a vet bill.
Massage it and when she is taking it easy ..try keeping a blanket around her, for the warmth for the muscles.
If it's not better in a around 3 days then you should take her to the vet.
Have fun with your wild furry kids..I bet they are a real kick in the butt to watch!

I would suggest taking her to the vet. It could be a number of things. If the mussel was torn you'd know it when you touched it. I also may be arthritis due to her age. I would suggest giving her 2 alieve pain pills every 4-6 hours as needed until you can get her in to see your vet. Since there are so many things that could be wrong its hard to diagnose on line and should be looked at by a professional. Good luck.

Sometimes the knee cap comes out of place. It could also be her back. My pom does this from time to time. I can't figure out if its her back or her leg. The vet will give her rimadol (spelling?) and say to keep her calm for a few days. Its usually better in a day or so. However my pom is only 4 yrs old.

It could be arthritis. Talk to your vet for the best advice, although you could try giving her a coated aspirin to relieve her pain. Be very careful with the dosage if she's small. Make sure its aspirin though, and not Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Advil (Ibuprofen) as these medications could seriously hurt a dog!

The only way to know for sure is to take her to the vet. Before it gets any worse.

It sounds alot like arthritis. Take her to the vets, they have good meds for canine arthritis now.

Could be. It could also be ligament damage from a recent injury. Have your vet take a look.

Yes it could. It also could be her hip, back or toe. Time for a vet visit!
