I live in Japan and we often go out Bamboo hunting for remodelling.
Mounting a fluorescent light into bamboo sounds very interesting, here are a few tips you may or may not be aware of...
Bamboo is a weak wood when cut or split and will probably crack with stress if holes are drilled into it. Make sure to reinforce around any holes you drill.
Inside the bamboo it is hollow, however there are sections and dividing these sections is bamboo tissue (wood). If your light is longer than a section, you will have to sort this problem out as well.
Sorry, I don't know where to buy it in England but good luck with your project!

Does it have to be "real" bamboo, if not usually you can get plastic bamboo sticks that look real in a fleamarket, or home stores such as the Home Depot (not sure if u have it in the UK), IKEA, Pier 1 Imports, etc....

I would recommend a home store such as Ikea, B+Q or Homebase etc. Ikea would be a first choice if you have one near to you, but if not try a home/DIY store.

Are you near a zoo? If so and they keep pandas, they have to feed them a lot of that everyday. Couldn't hurt to ask.
