I have been using Vaseline but recently read not to use it. Water based gels were better. Is this true? If so, what are some of the products?

Try using Ayr Gel (at most pharmacies) It is a saline based non-greasy gel. My son used to get nosebleeds from dryness and it really helped. You will find it near the nasal sprays or cold medicines. Doesn't burn or sting and can even be used on babies.

The best remedy is to drink plenty of fluids and use saline solution as a nose spray. You actually snort the solution, which will taste like salt water... it is the best way to moisten your nostrils and irrigate your sinuses, should you have a problem there as well. You can buy saline solution in the pharmacy section of any pharmacy or grocery store. It is usually available in numerous generic brands and they are all safe and the same formula. It is best because it is natural, rinses foreign objects from your nostrils as well as moisturize your nasal passages. It is made up of soluable saline and sterile water.

Petroleum products actually dry the skin. I do not know of any water based gels for nasal passages.

I don't know why you can't use Vaseline. My doctor highly recommended it and it really works.
