Texas to Soon Have Country's Highest Speed Limit
LAST UPDATE: 8/25/2005 9:36:00 PM
Several hundred miles of Interstates 10 and 20 in west Texas will soon have the highest posted speed limits in the country, 1200 WOAI news reported today.
A measure which takes effect next month will allow Tex-DOT to raise the speed limit to 80 miles an hour on Interstate 10 between Kerr and Culverson counties, and on Interstate 20 in Ward and Culberson counties.
I copied and pasted the above from an article dated August this year!!!
PS - Also from the article is the following of a HIGHER SPEED LIMIT
Gallego points out that under the ambitious 'Trans Texas Corridor' plan proposed by Governor Perry becomes reality, all of the 'Trans Texas Corridor' highways will have posted speed limits of 85 miles an hour.

Speed limits in the United States are set by each state. Speed limits are usually:
25–30 mph (40–50 km/h) on residential streets
35–45 mph (55–70 km/h) on urban arterial roads
50–65 mph (80–105 km/h) on major highways inside cities
45–65 mph (70–105 km/h) on rural two-lane roads
55–70 mph (90–110 km/h) on rural expressways
65–75 mph (105–120 km/h) on rural Interstate highways
Western states generally have higher limits than eastern states, and some limits fall outside these ranges. For example, some two-lane rural roads in Texas have 75 mph (120 km/h) speed limits, and there are a couple of Texas highways with 80 mph (130 km/h) speed limits (see below). In contrast, the highest speed limit posted on Interstates in Hawaii is 60 mph (95 km/h).

I believe it's 80 in some parts of Texas. As for the rumors of 95 in Nevada, that's not true. It's 75. In Montana it used to be (might still be) "reasonable and prudent". So if you have a POS going 80 in the rain, you'll get a ticket. But if you have a Vette or other fast car doing 90, you'll be ok. Studies have shown that most people on the open highway have a comfort zone of about 70-80.

Desolate I-80 from Reno to Omaha is posted 75 and most run 80. The same is true on I-10 from the California border to San Antonio. It's 95% heavy trucks, hauling goods for a living.
But you almost never see poeple trying to use it as some sort of speedway. In ten crossings of the western US, I think I've seen one or two. Someone who was being an idiot would be a hot topic for discussion among the truckers on CB radio. There are very few state troopers out there, but they listen to CB...

It sucks living in NYC. Because of the volume of cars, the speed limit is 55 mph on most highways and 50 in Staten Island. Who actually drives at 55?
