I wish I could give you an intelligent answer on why we are at war in Iraq. There isn't one. It's still going on because George W. Bush no matter what he's told or what the reality is will NOT admit he was wrong. People continue to die because of it.

Ok let me render this down to a timeline:
Iraq invaded Kuwait to try and increase it's power and oil supply during the first Bush administration.
The US and it's allies defeated Saddam's army and he agreed to "unconditional surrender"
Under that surrender, many conditions were put upon the govt of Iraq to keep further military action from occurring. One of these conditions was the complete turnover of all Weapons of mass destruction via inspections by the UN.
Saddam broke multiple resolutions over many years, which should have meant that he faced more military penalties. But Saddam understood how corrupt the UN is and bribed them via the allowed "oil for food" program, which was really an "oil for Saddam to build weapons and palaces and bribe the UN plan".
Saddam continually ejected the inspectors that were to ensure he was not hiding WMDs, leading up to the crisis under Bush 2. The UN, while they should have enforced their broken resolutions, wanted more of Saddam's bribes, so they balked.
The US and some of it's allies were forced to go into Iraq to stop this chain of corruption and before Saddam was able to slip out of all sanctions (the reason for the bribes in the first place) whereby he would begin to rebuild his weaponry to full capacity.
The allied forces finished off Saddam's army in short order, which was brilliant, actually.
However, the problems that occur today are because of the entanglements of Iran and Syria who don't wish to have a functional Democracy in Iraq, so they are sending in insurgents to stir up the pot and kill just about everyone.
That is about it up to this date....

OK to the person who has no clue and apparently has been out of touch with the world for the past 6 years. (and that's pretty bad too)
Extremist Muslims want us dead. They declared war on us and attacked us on 9/11. They threaten us daily. Right now the war is over in the Middle East. As apposed to here. IF WE hadn't freed Afghanistan and Iraq then the Murderers would be over here destroying our way of life. We are trying to show people in the Middle East that democracy and being able to have freedom to make your own choices in life is a good thing.
I'm sorry I just don't have the time to inform the blind masses that don't think past their front door.

You want an intelligent answer....The reason we are in Iraq is because in a province in Russia; Chevron and Shell own the largest reserves of oil and natural gas in the world....The only feasible way to get this to a port for shipping is through Afghanistan, Iran, and Iraq to the Persian Gulf..You can see now why our leaders are pushing the fact of Iran and their nuclear problem...This war has always been about oil never about terrorism...Its also about the money that the private contractors who never submitted bids but got the contracts who obviously are tied to higher government officials....For this I give you these facts---Bush & Cheney passed and energy bill that offered incentives to certain oil companies and oil related servicing companies....It is an interesting fact that Halliburton and Brown & Root divided into 2 separate companies so they could achieve better profits.....Fact---11 military installations and refineries were damaged by Hurricane Katrina, of those every rebuilding contract went to Brown & Root...Halliburton(the company that Cheney made 11,000,000.00 dollars salary from the year before becoming VP) is a company that provides oilfield services....It is interesting to me that Halliburton was awarded a contract of 5,000,000.00 to feed the American Troops in Iraq in 2006....Also Brown & Root was given the contract to rebuild war torn Iraq, although nothing is being done because they will not send their people to a war zone...Bush can blame all this mess on Saddam Hussein, but people need to look at the reason he was given the control of Iraq in the first place...He deserves to die for his war crimes, but the system that used him as a puppet needs to answer for their involvement....Will this ever happen, I doubt it, because our leaders keep padding their cronies pocketbooks while getting our troops killed....If you think that Iraq is the end of it, think again...We still need Iran to get that pipeline across....We as American Citizens need to question the Bush Family, The President, The Vice President on the reasons why they are making it easy for their interests to make money on death of troops....This problem goes back into the 60's, It involves historically favored politicians and an uninformed American Public....No matter how you look at it this shows what it is that drives this war, what greases the wheels, and what lines the pockets.....We are being duped by leaders who think everyone in their country are stupid and don't know the real facts.....If you wish to contact me further, feel free.....
To an answer above this has nothing to do with Al-Qaida....Bin Laden by the facts is much like Saddam Hussein, but as a string puppet he had the money to do as he pleased....Just a thought to ponder.....Outside of Boston in an exclusive neighborhood 20 members of Bin Laden's family lived until 2001.... It's amazing that on 9-12-2001 they flew out of Florida on a Saudi Arabian 747,
during a time of no fly in America....G.W. BUSH'S first oil venture was backed by Osama's older brother....Together we have to band together and be heard....Not be scared considering that this kind of knowledge can be a bad thing to have....A majority of the people can change the rules and stop the WAR FOR OIL AND PROFIT...

The war in Iraq is about controlling Oil and big business. Sadly Bush has leaded his nation on about the weapons there. In fact no weapons where ever found there. Now he claiming he brought democracy to Iraq. But sadly some people forget and don't want to remember that the USA once supported Saddam for years when the Iran conflict plus the seven years war between Iran and Iraq and guess who supported Saddam? You got it USA. nydiva28 see some here don't like your question. Or they saying your spelling etc. It a very touchy subject for Americans. Not American myself Irish here. But like i have mention above it true Bush has leads his nation. The 9/11 there is no prove that the bombers came from Iraq. In fact moe like it was Bin Laden Men. And before anyone attack me for saying this five Irish people died in the 9/11 bombing

hey counttessa do you think if war was about oil gas would be over two dollars a gallon....If it was about oil would we have put millions into fixing there oil wells and not getting reimbursed or a penny of it no!! the war was about WMDs, yes they were there your liberal heros in congress, and clinton and his cohorts even said he had them, saddam even used them on his own people. the war is about taking out an evil tyrant, who did have ties to alqueda, maybe not 9-11 but he did have terrorist ties. the war is also about iran, even saddam said it while in custody. before you go saying we've done nothing and this war was for nothing, there is a video on youtube, search it a keyword will be glenn beck, it tells alot of the good our troops have done for that nation, get both sides of whats going on over there instead of what the liberal mainstream media shows you

We are at war because the people cannot defend themselves and we feel obligated to help them so that they can have freedom. I feel that if we had more air surveillance, then we would win this war quickly. We need to know where all this bombing is coming from.

We've liberated 50 million people in Iraq and Afghanistan. Anyone who has a problem with that, seriously needs to consider how their brain works, because it's not funtioning properly.
