Sometimes its hard for children to adjust to a liquid diet. Keep offering him the drinks and he will probably take it once he realizes we isnt getting naything else. If you are really concerned, call and ask his peditrician. Good Luck and I hope he feels better soon.

Amoxicillen actually isn't that strong of an antibiotic. He won't get a urinary tract infection while on it since it is antibiotic. Don't fret too much about his fluid intake. Offer him water in a sippy cup and he will drink when he is thirsty. He can also get fluid by eating Jell-O or sucking on 100 % juice popsicles. Many ear infections resolve themselves on their own without the use of antibiotics. Give him acetaminophen for pain, give him lots of snuggle time, and he'll feel better in 24-48 hours after taking his first dose of medicine.

While on this medicine it is important to have lots of fluids, though clear fluids are the best he can still have milk. With the water though, most kids hate it plain, here is trick my Dad showed me, add a cap of vanilla extract and a bit of sugar, the water will now taste like a cream soda, just without the fizz. Juice, most children love apple juice, but there are ways to spice it up a bit to add a new flavor, like Cinnamon, allspice, or apple pie spice. Chicken broth is also a good fluid to drink while taking this medication. Though if he eats a snack or meal before drinking anything, he will be to full to drink very much.
Amoxcillin is a form of penicillin, it is just easier on the stomach than penicillin.

Give him something that you know he'll like. Thats the best I can do. Try pedialyte or something.
These antibiotics, while killing the bacteria causing the problem, also kill the bacteria that keep the other pathogens at bay. So if these little guys are gone, the bad bugs can come and get ya. However, I dont know of someone getting a UTI from dehydration.
Oh, he shouldnt be dehydrated, but dehydration is a problem even if you arent sick.

I agree with the other poster. Amoxicillin is really one of the lighter antibiotics. He only really needs to drink a little more than his normal intake and that's simply to combat fever and make him feel better. If he were on Augmentin or Omnicef I would understand your worry but I've never really heard of anyone having a bad reaction to amoxicillin.

My daughter is on amoxicillin now too also with ear infection ( she is 18 mos ) and my Dr said nothing about increasing the fluid intake. She took it in July too for the same reason. I haven't ever been told this.

Most kids when sick will eat a pop sickle. Pedilite (electrolyte balanced liquid to keep people hydrated) makes pop sickles and your son will never know the pop sickle you are giving him will be all the liquid he needs until he gets better. You can buy them at any grocery store, Wal-mart, etc.

He has to drink so much water a day just to keep a normal healthy immune system. Don't let him play with his toys until he has finished his drink. Will take awhile but he will learn. Or give him clear soup/broth.

My son does the same thing when he's sick. We give him popsicles and jell-o. He won't take a bottle when he's sick, but we can coax him to sip out of a cup b/c he sees us drinking from one. hope your little one feels better.

Try Gatorade or frozen popicles and offer it to him all day long, even if he takes little sips every 15 minutes or so
