OK #1. Your braces to not pose a threat to them, that is considered a part of your body, and you will be okay. The detector MAY beep, but you just show them your braces! :)
#2. They will NOT take your pencils. I travel with pencils, pens, and markers all the time just be sure to empty the contents of your pockets into the bin that is provided so that the items can be scanned in the security process.
#3. If you have any SHARP metal objects, razor blades, lighters(anything with fire), all liquids (water, juice, food) that is not purchased beyond the security checkpoint. As far as personal items make sure that they are small enough to fit into a small zip-lock bag. On the site TSA.gov you will find a complete list of banned, and appropriate items for travel.

1) I had braces... NO it will not beep.
2)NO...Pencils are not a threat unless if you make them.
3)Do not bring ANY LIQUIDS whatsoever. You may although have a 3 OUNCE ZIP-TOP BAG... THAT'S IT! All liquids must fit comfortably. Do not bring nail-clippers, scissors, or a sharp object. Otherwise, relax, you'll be fine.

They may stop and inspect you for your braces. (Are you talking dental or limb?) However, it should soon be obvious what they are. Don't worry about them.

I've carried pencils without a problem. Unless you've got dozens of them.

Check out this site, it's pretty simple to use ... http://www.tsa.gov/

Your braces and pencils should be fine. If you want to read the official stuff, here's the TSA page on what to expect at screening: http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/screening/index.shtm and Here's the US Transportation Security Administration's website with their list of permitted and prohibited items: http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm

Happy travels!
