I'm about to buy some books on amazon.com, and if I sign up for an amazon.com credit card, I could get $30 off my purchase. Is it worth it? I already use a Discover card now, and I have a few other credit cards as well that I don't use. Would it be bad for my credit to open up a new one?

I would not. Over time, you will be better off with a major credit catd instead of a company specific card. You will see you credit score drop due to the inquiry and if you open the account. The $30 you save today will cost you more than $30 in interest rates and car premiums due to yor score dropping.

It depends on how often you shop at amazon.com and how much you spend. If you spend a lot very frequently at amazon.com, then it may make sense to get the card as you can earn reward points which can be exchanged for amazon.com gift certificates.

I know people who buy dvds and books every month from amazon and spend a few hundred dollars each time. For them, it probably makes sense to get the card.

But only you can decide for yourself. I do not think opening another credit card is going to really hurt your score. Things like your debt to credit limit ratio have a bigger impact.
