My dog has a hot spot on her face. I shaved the area and noticed a dark spot next to it that looks like a melanoma. I've got an appointment with the vet, but the earliest they had was next Tuesday. Anyone have experience with this type of thing? She keeps scratching it even after I put Benadene (an over-the-counter hot spot medication) on it. Any suggestions? I'm worried because she keeps scratching it and it keeps opening up and bleeding.
Thanks for your help.

That looks like either ringworm or demodectic mange to me! Did the vet do a skin scraping? They need to, that's the best way to find out what it is. If it's mange it will manifest when the dog is stressed, new home, new food, sexual maturity, (even if neutered/spayed). Both conditions itch, ringworm is a fungus, mange is caused by a mite that all dogs carry, some dogs' immune systems can't keep the mite under control when the system is stressed. Another trip to the vet is in order.

I would go to your vet and get an Elizabethan collar (e collar). She will look like she has a lampshade on her head, but it will keep her from making it worse.

You might try CortAid spray (OTC hydrocortisone spray). It should help with the inflammation and itching.
