I have a German Sheppard/Labrador mix. She's about 9 months old. She HATES to come inside, but I live in the Midwest and it's gotten as cold as 7 degrees here, at night. She has a great dawg house and hay inside, but it is REALLY cold. When is it too cold for her to be outside??

I'm guessing that her dog house isn't insulated..like your house is..the walls and ceiling ect.
For our dog in the winter I would put old sleeping bags/blankets/carpet..whatever I could find and rap his whole house up from the outside of it. And I would use a staple gun to make sure that there wasn't any chance of a breeze.
A cold breeze in a warm dog house makes it really very miserable. Really.
Don't forget to take a piece of carpet or a doubled up gunny sack and staple it to the front door from the top. Make sure that it is big enough on all sides to make good coverage will just hanging. And only staple it from the top, Your dog might get tangled up in it and end up accidently tearing it down.
So....get on the ball girl!!
It's freakin' cold outside!
I was thinking maybe you could put her in a garage or a shed but it sounds like she would rather be where she can be alert to what ever is going on outside.
She sounds like a really nice dog and it's nice that you love her enough to care.
We need way more people like you!
Brrrrrrr. ~wink,wink~

Best thing to do is insulate her doghouse and put a lightbulb in the ceiling to generate heat inside. This way when she feels too cold, she doesn't have to wait for someone to let her in and you don't have to fight to get her to come inside. I would definately say 7 degrees is too cold. I have a Lab puppy and live in the central part of the states and she gets really cold if it's anything below 20. She has a doghouse that's insulated with a windbreaker wall and lightbulb. She loves being in that thing!

I know this will sound awfull to some but we had two farm dogs that loved it outside. We had a run for them with a horse size stall with straw for bedding. They stayed out for the majority of the winter.WE also gave them lots of food! They will use lots of energy keeping warm.Coyotes and wolves live outside and they're ok.I have to admit though, they came in when the temp dropped to -15

I would make her come in if it is below freezing outside (32 degrees). Also, make sure she is protected from the North wind and that her dog house is facing the south.

Your the owner of the dog, so whatever you do MUST be in best intrest of your pup. If you think its too cold then bring her in, otherwise just let her explore since she is still in the learning age. Im sure that if she feels its too cold she might want in, but still your the owner, not her.

Animals have instincts we don't have. And they will find a way to stay warm. But for your peace of mind. You need to get her a warming lamp or put her somewhere you will rest easier knowing she is safe.
