"There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God's rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from his. Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall" Hebrews 4:9

I have never kept the Sabbath in my life, I've been caught up in just going to church on Sunday. I see now that God still wants us to keep the Sabbath. I've been struggling a lot with having my faith in my heart and not my brain, so maybe keeping the Sabbath will be a huge step in my faith.

Any thoughts?

(This question is for Christians only because all Atheists and such will say is "I don't keep the Sabbath because religion is manmade" or whatever....................... But if you want the points for answering a question you can go ahead, I wont be a jerk and report you. I just wont pay attention to you.

AMEN!!!!! my family and I just started keeping the Word of God and His sabbath- the seventh day--- you will hear all kinds of reasons why we should not do it and they do not hold water - the only verse in the Bible that mentions Jesus rising on sunday, is not found in the older texts- leads one to believe they were added in? history reports the Passover fell on a Wednesday of that year - hence Jesus rose on Sat not sun---- but even if people were to argue this point with you- the Bible no where changes Gods day from sat to sun--- Constine did "council of laodicea in AD 363" look it up-- that's one reason it mentions how the whole world would be led astray--- stick to your thinking- that is how Father "marks " us , to keep His Sabbaths!!!!!

Okay! You ask a good question and

Colossians 2:16
Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day

Hebrews 4:8-10
8For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day. 9There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; 10for anyone who enters God's rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from his.

Matthew 12:7-9 (New International Version)

7If you had known what these words mean, 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice,'[a] you would not have condemned the innocent. 8For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath."

27Mark 2
Then he said to them, "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. 28So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath."

So, here is where all this is going. God wants us to rest and focus on Him. To renew ourselves in his loving presences and to worship him. But, he expects us to still do what is right even on "the Sabbath"

If you go all Jewish about the Sabbath you could not even go to your church to celebrate, because it was too far to go. You could not fix a meal or go to a reasturant either.

Now as for Sunday over Saturday. It was explained to me that some where along the way Early Christians took to meeting on Sundays as it was the day Christ triumphed over the grave and destroyed the old covenant and created a new one written in our hearts. It is also the first day of the week and a great way to start said week!

But, let us not be stiffnecked as Sadducee and Pharisee. Choose a day of rest for yourself and love your God! rejoce and be glad! Lift up your eyes to the hills from whence your help comes! Praise God!

Then get back to work!

First, Sabbath was/ is from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday. What was the purpose of Sabbath keeping?
Mark 2:27-28
27 And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath: 28 Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

God is more concerned about people than He is for the Sabbath.

By the time of Paul's writing, Christians had begun worshipping on Sunday because that was the day of Jesus' resurrection, and to make the break from being a Jewish sub-group (called a cult). We continue worshipping on Sunday for the same reason.

If you are going to keep the Sabbath, there is a lot more to it than just going to church on Saturday, it is a very stringent and legalistic way of life.

Paul said "Ye are not under the law but under grace" The sabbath was kept by jews under the law.Paul said one man esteemeth one day above another.Another man sees all days the same. There is no such thing as a holy day in this age of grace.Paul said "All things are legal for me but not all things are expedient".If we try to keep the law we are sinning against Christ. The Bible says We are foolish having begun in the Spirit why do we desire tio be back under the law.The law was sometimes called the letter. The Bible says "The letter killeth but the Spirit maketh alive."

I think it is definitely important to set aside a day for the Sabbath. Whether you go to church on Sunday or Saturday is up to how you're led. I know that had an overnight job for a while that started on Sunday night at 10 pm and it seemed good to go
ahead and do it.

Colossians 2:16,17: Therefore let no one act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day - things which are a mere shadow of what is to come; but the substance belongs to Christ"
The sabbath rest referred to in the passage you quote is a spiritual state we are urged to enter into by faith in the completed work of Christ. It is not referring to the Jewish Sabbath, which technically begins at sundown Friday and lasts until sundown Saturday.

Good question. And the answer is this.

God does have some common sense. If there are things you must do on Sabbath, then do them. Otherwise, take the day off and relax. Check the bible, Jesus does explain this a little better.

The rest that is spoken of in the new testament is speaking of the ceasing of works by self. The laying down of life and allowing Jesus Christ to take over.
You enter into the rest when you give up and give Jesus your all.

Lots of symbolism in the bible.

Have you entered into the Rest?

I think acting out on those requirements will strengthen your faith, like fasting. As I understand the sabbath, God wants us to make sure we take one day out to put him first. I don't even really think today, it needs to be Sunday. My Sunday revolves around church, family, house things. Sometimes I have to do work. But there are other things you can do that puts God first, study groups, prayer circles, etc...

Romans 7;4. Read the NT epistles very seriously. You will note that 9 of the 10 Commandments are reinstated for the Christian. One is specifically omitted. No 4. This is too simple, give me something harder.
