You need to apply a little chalk to the tip and then hit it ever so slightly below middle - but you need to hit it firmly. This may produce a bit of back spin but at least you wont scratch.

Mickey Mantle has it right. The further away you are from the object ball the lower you need to strike the cue ball. The reason being the english wears off of the cue ball and the desired effect is gone. It could also be that you are lifting up your cue stick as you are stroking wich will give you high english follow thru on every shot.

Follow the good advice from the previous posters. I won a small tournament (8 players) Saturday when my opponent followed the 8-ball into the pocket. Obviously he thought that he had hit a stop shot but from my vantage point I could see his cue raise up at the last instant, producing the forward roll. Many players try to impart their will on the cue ball by "jabbing" at it. But the proper way to impart any backspin on the ball is to hit the cue ball at the right contact point (below center) and follow through.

It sounds like you are either following through the cue ball which is "pushing" the ball rather than stopping it or you are raising the tip up on the ball during contact.Try hitting in the lower center of the cue ball with a medium stroke but make a sort of "jab" shot on the ball.

Depends a little on the cue ball and the distance to the object ball.......bar tables where you pay to play and the cue ball comes back out when you scratch uses a much heavier ball then regular tables.....so you really need to go low on them.......with regular cue balls the further away the more low you need to go......get there early and just lay this shot out and shoot it to get the feel of the shot so that when it comes up you don't even have to think about it.......keep your stick level as well....you might just be hitting the cue ball wrong on your follow thru.....have someone check your stroke to make sure you are keep the butt (cue butt now) level when you stroke......#1 thing...practice the shot prior to the match....all tables are different also.....good luck on the tour!!.....I will be expecting my 1%!!!!!

Hit below centre, stroke through the cue ball and hit with medium speed. Too soft and the backspin will be lost before cue ball makes contact and if you shoot too hard the cue tip doesn't transfer backspin to the cue ball well.

You need to put slight bottom english on it. Hit it more towards the bottom of the ball, not the middle.

make sure your follow through is not an upward stroke, i have the same problem and if you focus on that one spot of the ball through the entire stroke, it will also eliminate the forward roll
