All piercings hurt, that's just how that is. However if you relax, take deep breaths, you should be okay. The piercing will take up to a year to heal but the average for cartilage is closer to 6-8 months.
The risky part is that the cartilage takes a long time to heal and can get infections and keloids (scar tissue) rather easily. If you have your ear pierced with a piercing gun, you are at a higher risk for infections, ear collapse and pain because the stud bluntly tears the flesh. The piercing stud is not suited for swelling and proper cleaning, based on the jewelry shape it traps germs and buildup which is why it causes more infections.
A professional piercer will use a hollow needle which simply cuts a crescent shaped slot into the ear and the skin is moved around the jewelry. The jewelry they will use is a CBR which will allow for swelling, proper cleaning and best healing. The professional piercer will also decrease risk for cross contamination because they are better trained and certified.

Go to a professional piercer, take good care of your piercing and you should be problem free

I had it done a few months ago and I didn't think it hurt. It makes you jump because you hear this really loud click when they do it. The part that hurts is sleeping on it. I can tell you from personal experience that it woke me up from a dead sleep because I rolled over on it. They hurt (like a dull pain) for about 3 months and then I changed them to little hoops and the pain was gone. The risk that everyone talks about is infection. You have no blood in the cartilage so it takes a lot longer for it to heal and a lot more cleaning than you'd do on a lobe piercing. My advice: if you want it, do it. I did, I love mine. Go to a Claires to have it done, they do them all the time... If not them just make sure the place you are going is very clean, don't be afraid to ask questions and change the earring AFTER 12 weeks. Last piece of advice, don't go to another state and get it done like I did, they don't let you take the cleaning solution on the plane and you have to end up using alcohol, which hurts like crazy!

I am 37 now , and got my upper right ear pierced when i was 18. I started my first job, and where i worked at the time, we worked for an IV making company (BAXTERS TRAVENOL) If you see one of these bags in the hospital that's where they came from.
ANYWAY, we had to wear hairnets the whole time. and this kept aggravating my pierced ear. It finally got better, but over the years sometimes i wouldn't wear it and i guess it was trying to grow back up. Always seemed to hurt a little when i pushed the earring through. I have just now been wearing my earring through it. and it is completely better. when i had it done , it hurt just like the other ones. But it don't hurt for long. It is kinda hard to wear the temporary earring in it ( the one you get when it is pierced) Because, its further up on the ear and hurts a little with that side on the pillow, when your sleeping. Sure, i would do it again, its really no big deal. Hope this loooooong answer helped you.Sorry Also, mine was through the very edge, not the bone.

In my experience, it hurts less than the earlobe. On a scale of 1-10 I'd say it's a 1. Or less than that even. You should get your ear pierced with a needle from a professional though. Not with an eargun in the mall somewhere. You can easily get an ear infection or other complicatons if you get it done with an eargun.

When I got my ear pierced it hurt really bad. I could not sleep on that side for a month. If you use the solution that they give you it will not get infected and will increase healing. By the way my ear was pierced with a gun. It might be different for people who get it done with needles.

it is not extremely painful and it only hurts a little bit. i did and i like how it looks. it does however take a little extra time to heal because it is a bone that you're piercing through. though it may sound painful it really isnt.
i guess it depends on the type of person you are. if you have ever had you're belly pierced then this is nothing. if you havent it really doesnt hurt alot. also, it depends on whether you yourself is sensitive to pain (small or big), or whether you have sensitive skin.
just be careful not to hit it during the healing process like when you're combing your hair or something. then...i wont lie...it would hurt.
oh and make sure you take care of it (cleaning it and stuff).

I've had it done and it doesn't hurt. It might be a little bit more of a pinch then the bottom but it's not painful at all. Take care of it more then you would a bottom piercing. Because it's all cartilage it can get infected easier. Clean it out everyday.

It does hurt more than getting your lobes pierced. Mine was sore after getting pierced longer than when I got my lobes pierced. It is definitely less painful than any other body piercing.
As far as I know there is no risk unless their is a vein running through your ear that they could accidentally pierce. If you are really worried about it talk to a license piecing place.
