Absolutely. A healthy dose of cynicism and disbelief never hurt anybody.

No matter what or how much you give, you always leave your self open to abuse. I suppose it depends how strongly you feel about something, that determines how much abuse you would be willing to take. If in your heart you know you are right, this may be quite a lot, if it is something quite un-important to you it may be far less. You know, no one has `to turn the other cheek` because they think it is expected of them. You can always surprise the abuser, by giving them a taste of their own medicine. Sometimes it can be quite therapeutic.

I remember once when I was 18/19, I left myself totally exposed and got hurt so deeply it has affected every relationship I have had ever since..
It was the one and only time I ever loved a girlfriend, not happened since.
However, after 12 years of not seeing her, we are meeting up for an xmas drink, i hope it will lay the ghost once and for all.

Of course, but that doesn't mean that you always have to take it.
If you give totally like you say, then you can't fight back against the abusive person, but you can certainly pray to God for him or her to stop the abuse and if you can't take it anymore, you just have to leave that person behind, both physically and emotionally.

Sure .... that's why so many "hold back". HOWEVER, the more you give, the more you *feel* and it's the feeling that is the reward, not merely getting something from another. It's the bliss you feel when you give of your own love.

yes, totally - but giving can become used to manipulate others as well - martyrdom is not a pleasant trait in anyone
