it depends on where you want to go, what you take, money, and number of people just to name a few. first item is how far off road you want to go. if its just boat launches and trailheads forget 4x4. if you need to get futher back that 4x4 may be needed. second, what are you carrying? vans are often better at carrying rooftops boats than trucks and have the advantage of keeping everything safe and dry. trucks are better for large heavy items or real dirty stuff[ bleeding deer carcasses for example]. what can you afford? a 4x4 will cost more to buy and mantain than other driveline options. a cargo van is often a real steal for what you get. how many guys are goint to get stuffed into it? realistic seating is 2 for a standard truck cab, 4 for an extended cab or most SUVs, vans up to 10 or 12 depending on how much cargo space you are willing to give up. SUVs in general are not a good answer if you need space but wil work well for 1 or 2 people and a couple of kayaks. they're short and limited for carrying long stuff like fishing poles or 1 piece kayak paddles.

Jeep Cherokee XJ 4WD 4.0l 6 cyl engine. (not the Grand cherokee).
I am a big fan of the XJ Cherokee, tough, strong, 4.0 l engines last 200k miles, can go anywhere a Jeep Wrangler can go and a lot of places any other SUV (besides Rover) can't go. Big cargo room because it's square, strong roof for racks and gear.
Parts are readily available everywhere and since they made so many, every mechanic in the country can work on them.
Lots and lots of performance parts, lift kits, etc.
These aren't as popular with soccer moms anymore, but still darn good trucks.
You can get one from the late 90s with under 100k miles on ebay for under $4000 right now....so I'm sure you can find one in your area....

Extended cab pickup. Plenty of interior storage and seating plus outside storage for the messy stuff. Most suv's are made on a car frame and can't hold up to the real outdoors.
