There are several explanations. I have had a similar scare.
1. It is winter. You are going to shed. No big deal.
2. You are shampooing too often. I used to shampoo every day. Now I shampoo once every three days and use a light conditioner every time I shower.
3. Look at your mum's hair. Your hair pattern follows the maternal gene. If she went thin at a young age, I hate to say it, but you may be going thin too.
4. Do you dye/hilight/perm your hair? I have done all three and excessive dying and perming can lead to follical damage. This won't mean a permanent hair loss, but when the follical is damaged, it could take anywhere from seven months to a year to grow back to replace.
5. Rough sex. You may giggle, but I used to date a person that loved to pull my hair in the middle of sex. Moral of the story, I went thin in the back for about six months.
6. Stress. Just plain and simple.
7. Improper diet. As a former anorexic/bulimic, I would lose lots of hair in the shower and on my pillow durring my crash dieting days. Make sure that you are eating well.
Just give your hair a rest. No pulling, no chemicals, and just try to relax and I hope everything works out for you.

I am having the same problem. It just started the last few months. It comes out a lot when I wash or brush and some even when i don't. I am not old either and this amount of hair loss is not normal for me. I thought maybe it could be stress ? I don't know.

Hi,
As you have mentioned that your hair falls even when you do not brush them,it simply indicates that they are very easily breakable and have become brittle.
The reason for the same can be any one of these :
Unhealthy diet
No proper cleaning of hair
Use of hard or chemical extensive shampoo
Combing when hair are wet
Tension
My simple advise to improve the quality and quantity of your hair is to :
Put oil regularly especially of almond or amla
Brush your hair as less as you can(maximum 3-4 times a day)
Do not comb when you have just washed them.Let them dry first
Use shampoo having a good content of ingredients which are helpful in strengthening hair such as lemon, amla, neem, tulsi or aloe vera, etc.
Do not wash them more than twice a week
Have a healthy diet full of proteins and vitamins because when your rest of the body is healthy , it will also reflect in you hair.
Try them and you will see the results.
Hope any one of the above work for you.

Lots of things can cause your hair to fall out more than usual. High stress levels, switching birth control pills, eating too little, and some medications are all things that can make your hair fall out. However, if the volume of hair falling out is very high, you should probably see a doctor especially if it is accompanied by other health issues.

Sometimes hair just falls out!
Mine does, and it is no problem. Maybe you should use a better shampoo, but that isn't uncommon.
It could be bad, but normally that is just a sign new hair is growing in. Still, you may want to see a doctor, if it gets bad that is.

your hair follicles might be clogged.if that is the problem either get some shampoo with tea tree oil in it or buy a small bottle and mix a couple of drops with your shampoo that you have.it is not expensive.go to walmart and ask for help in finding it.good luck.if that does'nt work do as some of the others said and get your thyroid checked.

if it's a few strands at a time every now and then, there's nothing to worry about. but if it's a lot, and you have considerably less hair, you might want to see a doctor. there is a hair loss disorder called alopecia (sp.?), and it can occur at any age.

Good luck!
