who needs a corkscrew if you've got a hammer, a screwdriver a large screw and a set of pliers? screw the screw into the cork all the way down leaving enough to pry it out half an inch with the nail remover part of the hammer. then use the pliers to pull the cork gently out of the bottle. no mess, and no bits of cork at the bottom of your wine. enjoy

or go next door and knock on your neighbors door and ask them to enjoy a glass of wine with you........

I've run into this problem when the corks broke. Easiest (but not the most elegant) thing to do is shove the cork -into- the wine bottle, gently with a dull knife. To pour, hold the knife inside the neck of the bottle, holding the cork back.

Not pretty, but it works just fine.

Buy a pressurized wine needle ... uses a CO2 charge to push the cork out of the bottle with gas pressure.

Caution: If the cork is really STUCK to the bottle or the bottle is fragile, you can also blow the bottle up...

Switch to twist-off ... it is becoming more acceptable in the States and has already been accepted in Europe as a means to maintain consistency in flavor ...

Oh! This has happened to me many many times. Push the cork into the bottle. It simply floats in the wine.

Sure beats not drinking when you don't have a cork screw!

Push the cork into the bottle with a butter knife. This prevents floaties as well - don't point the bottle at yourself when doing this. Especially not if doing it with red wine.

There is an easier, and whole lot more fun way to get a cork out without a cork screw: shake the bottle, and it'll pop out. I like to do that a lot.
Now, do keep in mind that you have to be careful with the people around you. I got to hit my mom in the arm once. :P

You can use a knife, but you will have bits of cork in the wine to get out.

most methods above work just fine, but if you do get cork in your wine for any reason, then use a coffee filter to keep it from pouring in the glass.

You can hit the neck of the bottle just under the lip with the back of a heavy knife. It works and it's impressive as hell. Do it over the sink the first time..
