Well....why not? Is there something special about a rat that should be given a soul?
A rat is a bio-mechanical cog in this great soul factory we call Earth. It performs a function, and dies. It follows the lines of evolution as its environment and genetic coding allows. but through out history, it has performed the same basic function.
Humanity, on the other hand, chooses which function it is to play. In order to do that, it must be capable of reasoning beyond it's genetic coding. Things likes, greed, sloth, and pride are a few examples that you won't find in any other bio-mechanical device. We were constructed very differently, with a different element to our " programming". This, I believe, supports the theory of the " Human Soul "
Best wishes.

Anything living has a soul. We are not these bodies. Animals eat sleep mate and defend and so do humans. The only difference is we have the intelligence to question our existence and relationship to God also known as Krishna, Allah, Jehovah, Vishnu, etc. One must understand Karma and Reincarnation to get the full picture. We are just transmigrating from one species to the next until we come to the human form of life then we have the opportunity to stop this Birth death old age and disease. But if we don't we just keep coming back until we decide this is a bad deal and become sincere to reciece the process to come to our constitutional position. The quickest and easiest process for this age is to chant the Maha mantra or the great mantra for deliverance of suffering and illusion. go to harekrishna. for complete understanding.

Dear Ben:
We humans when compared to other furry creatures have only a very small variation in DNA. But that variation, as tiny as it is, results in a multitude of difference.
Humans, unlike rats are able to understand object permanence.
Consider this analogy from the genious Makito Montybony:
As we get older and our mental capabilities improve we move from a simple understanding that if a ball is in front of us and we do not observe the ball as it is taken away that the perception that the ball no longer exists is not real but rather we perceive that it still exists even though we do not see it any longer...our perception of time and space is relative to the position from which we are observing and holds the time as constant as the knowledge of the existence of the ball no matter from what position we observe it from...if you have not grasped the concept of object permanence, observing the time would be easier to understand if you were in space observing others on earth in different time zones...now, consider that if you were capable of traveling past the speed of light (close to 300,000,000 m/s) and not rearranging your atoms across the whole of the universe in the process, you would be able to theoretically enter into the forth dimension and move through time both forward and backward and then live in the future or live in the past. MMM
Now, consider that, as humans we also are able to perceive time and space. That is, we understand and can speak in past, present and future tense.
These two major characteristics separate us from the lower animal/mammal forms. They also allow us to understand the concept that even though we do not SEE God, he is still there.
If you take Genesis literally you would see that we are told God experimented with DNA until he came up with a being capable to having a soul, that is capable of decerning the difference between right and wrong and making that choice. I believe Genesis is symbolic, but it does make for a good part of this tale to use it as literal.
Object permanence, time and space perception, ability to understand that because you cannot see something does not mean it is no longer there, the freedom of perceiving right from wrong...these are the reasons that eternal life is for humans and not for rats (though I do believe animals do have eternal life, though not sure about rats, sorry...seems they may have come from "the other guy downstairs").
I have been blessed to be a student of Makito. If you have failed to grasp what I have said here, please contact me and I would be glad to introduce you. He is known to be one of the greatest minds on earth today...or perhaps I just perceive him as such.
All My Love

So how come rats aren't operating computers and driving cars? Rats should have their own Supreme Court and doing their daily laundry. LOL Bad analogy eh?

Is this Willard the rat you are speaking about, they made a movie about him years ago. I think human beings are a bit more important then a disease carrying rat. Give your head a shake.

Ugh... a rat is a rodent, it stinks, has a brain smaller than a peanut, rats don't act emotionally as us...
Humans rule the Earth at the moment. Our soul means more than any animal around.

first of all, i think rats have souls just like every other living thing. and secondly, humans do have a fundamental difference from rats, and that difference is the ability to choose between doing good or doing harm.

What is the problem with Atheism?
Atheism is more than just a problem for faith. It fails to qualify as science. A good science pursues naturalistic explanations of natural phenomena. The tradition of biology begun with Charles Darwin in 1859 and running down to the present time is good science. Darwinism provides the most adequate natural explanations for the evolution of one species out of a previous species. As good science, it avoids saying anything about God’s action in the world. Because science tells us how creatures act with regard to one another, we do not expect science to say anything directly about the creator. For a scientist to conclude that there is no God - which is the conclusion of the atheist - is simply unwarranted by the science. Atheism fails to be scientific, because science deals with the world of creatures, not the realm of the creator.
