Just give yourself time to grieve. Don't rush yourself through it, don't tell yourself or allow others to tell you he was "just a pet" or that you should get over it quickly. Losing a pet is losing a member of your family and you'd never rush yourself through that so please don't now. Only time will help unfortunately. We lost one of our cats to cancer 3 years ago and it still hurts, I still cry when I look at his pictures, but it's not as bad as it was those first few months afterwards. I'm sorry you're having to go through this. I hope you find peace that he's going to be more comfortable.

Hes in a better place and get a kitten or another dog that will help. Or some times its better to cry it out until your done your weeping. I lost a dog two of my favorite dogs one got hit by a car and the other one died last summer and I miss them so much. I wish I was there but when we got a new puppy I felt much happier again.

There are many things you can do to honor his memory. You can have him buried in a pet cemetery. Another option is to have him cremated individually and have his remains placed in a nice urn to keep his memory. I did this for my dog, because I could not stand the thought of the normal "community cremation," where a bunch of animals are cremated at the same time after euthanasia. Community cremation is what normally happens to your dog when he is put to sleep unless you make arrangements for private cremation or burial.
To help with the healing process, I also recommend that you make a memorial donation in his name to a local shelter or online animal welfare group like HSUS.org. Even better, it will help to go to your local shelter and spend time volunteering with the other dogs, in an effort to enhance their lives and make them more adoptable.
I know this is a rough time. Good luck and take care.

Spend as much "quality" time with your dog now, then when it's "time" stay with the dog when the vet gives him the injection, hold him and pet him and say your goodbyes. I my dog Max cremated and I have his ashes, you might want to do that as well. I don't recommend getting another dog right away, give yourself time to grief for your lost friend then later on when you feel the time is right get another dog if you want. I suggest the animal shelter as your first stop. Hang in there you will make it and when YOUR time comes he will be waiting for you.

I had my rabbit die he was so special .I cried a lot at first. But then I tried to remember all the fun we had together playing ball and sock and how good he was when he was a Papa to his little baby bunnies He would go and get the babies and place them at the momma bunnies feet when they would go behind the couch. He was so smart he taught the babies to be litter trained.
I believe since God made all things spiritually first that we will see our pets in heaven again but they will be whole and beautiful I look forward to seeing him again.
Hugs honey just think of the good times Your dog would not want you sad He would want you happy You will see him again

I know how you feel!
Its hard at first, as I suggest you get another animal to fill your heart to stop some greif and pain.
It took me months, and I'm still not 100% over my loss because she was my best friend and I too had her my whole life. If you need any help at all you can email me.
I have helped a lot of my friends, strangers that came into the shelter, and people from my church get through there losses.
Good luck, I hope I helped, and if you ever need anything just email me.

I'm a vet tech. And I know that it is so much better to put a loved one in a peaceful sleep and not to suffer anymore. The suffering of an animal is different than us, They can't tell you how much it hurts, and it has been proven that animals don't show the extent of their pain because of not letting the preditor get them. So cry, love, and remember them.

I am so sorry! I've been there many times, and words are of little comfort. There are several good websites to help you through this period of grief. One of my favorites is www.petloss.com. Make sure and read "The Rainbow Bridge" which is a well known article regarding animals and their death.
